I love my Singer sewing machine, whatever project I try, it's up to the task

Who says quilting has to be a massive undertaking? Embracing the charm of quilting on a smaller scale can bring immense joy and creativity into your life. Enter quilt square greeting cards, the delightful fusion of crafting and heartfelt gestures.
The fun of making your own quilt square greeting card lies in its simplicity and the immense scope for creativity it offers. You don’t need to tackle a whole quilt to share the warmth and artistry of quilting with your friends and family. Just a few fabric scraps, a dash of imagination, and voila! You have the perfect canvas to stitch your sentiments.
These miniature quilts, stitched with love, become more than just cards—they are tokens of affection, carrying the essence of your creativity and care. Imagine the smiles they'll bring as your loved ones unfold not just a card, but a piece of your creative spirit.
The beauty of quilt square greeting cards is that they allow you to experiment freely. You can play with colors, patterns, and textures, creating unique designs that reflect your personality. Each card becomes a mini masterpiece, a testament to your artistic flair.
Best of all, this craft lets you dive into quilting without the commitment of a full-scale project. It’s the ideal way to explore the world of quilting, stitch by stitch, while sharing the joy with those around you.
So, the next time you're looking to send a special message, consider crafting your own quilt square greeting card. It's a small, heartfelt gesture that carries the weight of creativity and the warmth of your affection. And remember, you don’t need to make a whole quilt to share your creativity—sometimes, a tiny square is all it takes to sew the threads of joy and love. Happy quilting! 🧵✨

I tend to go patternless when making blocks for display in the shop, but this time I followed a rough sketch for piecing it together, see below. Check out the back of our pie safe to see it in person!
Using a Salty Square (or a ShopHop square) as the base dimension, the rest of the dimensions should (ha!) fall into place pretty easily.

RAFFLE
On Thursday, February 24th, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine and began the war that continues as I write this note on May 20th, 2022. Feeling useless as I watched the news roll in, but wanting to do something.. anything.. I started printing patterns in blue and yellow with a vague idea of making a quilt to hang in the shop's window.
Fast forward to May 1st and YOU, The Friends of Salty Hippo Studio, bought enough $10 raffle tickets to donate a total of $2,210 to World Central Kitchen, a group doing amazing work feeding people in and around Ukraine—as well as right here in the States.
I had the pleasure of delivering the quilt to our raffle winner, Johanne Blackburn, last week and she's proposed split custody of the quilt: when she isn't displaying it in her barn for an event, it will remain in the shop's window 💙💛.
Salty Hippo Studio is hosting a fun workout event later this month (check it out below) so, in the spirit of giving our muscles a stretch, here’s a beginner-level project that you can try with our fat quarters.
Using this pattern, rice or beans, and half of a fat quarter (great opportunity to make a second one for a friend!), I made a microwavable heating pad that is perfect post-workout. If you use rice as a filler, you can even add essential oils for maximum chill.
Sink into relaxation mode—shop fat quarters here:
They say the cure for anything is salt water (sweat, tears, or the sea), so while I figure out a way to be beachside at some point this summer, I think the best alternative is a workout!
Get your sweat on and join Salty Hippo Studio and Travis of Darr Fitness for a free low-impact, high-gratification flexibility session for all fitness levels.
Missed the class in July? Keep an eye out for another one coming soon!
It’s no hot take that working out is good for your body, but did you know that it’s also great for your skin?
I recently discovered the benefits of all the wonderful, natural, salty minerals in sweat that create a healthy biome for your skin (yes, like kimchi for your face!).
This is exactly what my current obsession, Drunk Elephant’s Sweet Biome Fermented Sake Spray, is meant to mimic. I mist my makeup-free face with it before getting ready for the day, and anytime I need a little refresher. Ahh!
Until next time, see ya in the studio.

My super-long, yardage table, Moira, finally got to see some printing action this week! I rid her of the pile of tools she’s been kindly holding for me and, using a homemade dye concoction, printed my first long length of fabric. This is a huge step toward printing yardage. Moira and I have a long way to go, but I’m all about celebrating the little wins along the way!
P.S. This inaugural yardage is now with my pattern-maker and is being turned into a little number I hope to be wearing shortly.
Until next time!

My leaf patterns are inspired by the etched glass windows uncovered (imagine hours and hours of scraping...) while renovating the building that is now Salty Hippo Studio. The windows look like originals—circa 1894!—and the patterns bring a nice graphic punch to all kinds of projects.
Chillicothe, MO is a town filled to the brim with artistic murals which makes taking photos in town a blast. The bright, saturated colors of this mural were a perfect background for the plum, rose, and blue shades I chose for my sunset quilt.
