2024Hello!
ABOUT THE STUDIO
Salty Hippo Studio is an art studio and retail space in Chillicothe, Missouri.
In the studio, I design and hand-print textiles. I print using the screen print method and my designs tend towards graphic interpretations of the world around me, from the built environment to nature. Everything is created in small batches and is unlike anything you’d find in chain stores.
AND A BIT ABOUT ME
In 2019, I moved to Missouri from NYC where, for the last 14 years, I had worked as a creative strategist for a wide range of clients—from Vogue to Polyvore to CoverGirl. But I’ve always had a heart for working with my hands and for pattern-making, so I jumped at the opportunity to build my own work/live studio space close to my family here in Missouri.
That—with a few twists, turns, and global pandemics thrown in—is how The Studio came to be. I'm now here in Chillicothe, Missouri, renovating and transforming a musical instrument building from 1894 into the Salty Hippo headquarters (AKA Salty Hippo Studio) and creating the kinds of patterns and fabrics I’ve always wanted but could never find.
SO... WHAT'S WITH THE HIPPO?
A few years ago, I was camped in Botswana and was captivated by the laughter of hippos (for real, this is a thing). So, when thinking about a mascot/logo/stamp-for-the-print-studio, I wanted an image that encapsulated the things I love (like my mom cracking up while dancing in our kitchen, my grandpa’s loud belly laugh after telling one of his notoriously salty jokes, and my big Italian family giggling over dinner in Sicily) and was reminded of the hippos.
I’m happiest when surrounded by unbridled, pervasive laughter, so the hippo became a kind of personal mascot, salty attitude and all.
