Make a Salty Square Star Ornament
Share

A little fabric, a little stuffing, and a saying for someone who’s sunshine mixed with a little hurricane. This simple ornament starts with a Salty Square cut into a star and zigzag stitched onto the front before sewing and stuffing.
What you’ll need
- One Salty Square
- Fabric for the ornament’s front and back
- A small amount of polyester stuffing
- Thread for sewing and zigzag stitching
- Ribbon, cord, or strong thread for hanging
- Paper, pencil, scissors, pins, and a sewing machine
- A hand-sewing needle
1. Cut out your Salty Square star
Draw a star on paper, making sure the saying fits inside its center. Use it as a template to cut your Salty Square into a star, leaving enough fabric around the printed design for your zigzag stitches.
2. Cut the ornament pieces
Draw a second, larger star for the ornament’s body. Make it large enough to leave a border around your Salty Square star, plus a ¼" seam allowance around the outside.
Cut two matching stars from your front and back fabrics.
3. Attach the Salty Square
Center the Salty Square star on the right side of the front fabric. Pin it in place, then zigzag stitch around its raw edges to attach it. Choose matching thread or a contrasting color to make the stitching part of the design.
4. Sew the ornament
Place the front and back stars right sides together and pin.
Sew around the star with a ¼" seam allowance, leaving an opening of about 2" along one of the straighter edges for turning and stuffing. Backstitch at the beginning and end.
5. Turn right side out
Trim excess seam allowance at the outer points and carefully clip into the inner corners without cutting the stitches. This helps the star keep its shape when turned.
Turn the ornament right side out through the opening. Gently push out the points with a blunt turning tool or chopstick.
6. Stuff and close
Add small amounts of stuffing, working it into the points first. Fill the center until the star is as soft or plump as you like.
Fold the opening’s seam allowances inward and hand-stitch it closed.
7. Add a hanger
Secure a loop of ribbon, cord, or strong thread to the top point with a few hand stitches.
Hang it on the tree—or tie it onto a gift for a little extra personality.
