Make a Simple Salty Square Drawstring Bag

One Salty Square, a little backing fabric, and a drawstring are all you need to make a small bag for sewing notions or a little gift.

What you’ll need
- One Salty Square, trimmed to a 4½" or 5" square
- One backing fabric square cut to the same size
- Thin cord or ribbon
- A small safety pin
- Thread and basic sewing supplies
1. Make the drawstring channels
On each fabric square, fold the top edge ¼" toward the wrong side and press. Fold down another ½" and press again.
Stitch close to the lower folded edge to make a channel for your drawstring. Leave both ends of each channel open.
2. Sew the bag
Place the two squares right sides together, matching the folded tops.
Using a ¼" seam allowance, sew down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side. Start and stop just below the drawstring channels so you don’t sew their openings closed. Backstitch at both ends.
Finish the raw seam edges with a zigzag stitch if desired.
3. Turn right side out
Trim the bottom corners without cutting into the stitching. Turn the bag right side out and gently push out the corners.
4. Add the drawstring
Attach a safety pin to one end of your cord or ribbon. Thread it through the front channel, then through the back channel, bringing both ends out on the same side.
Leave enough length to open the bag fully, trim the cord, and knot the ends together. Pull to gather the top.
For a bag that cinches from both sides, add a second cord following the same path, starting and ending on the opposite side.
